WHAT STEPS DID IT TAKE TO GET YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
My journey of fashion started when I was in middle school. I fell in love with the dynamic sixties and seventies and how colorful their clothing was. They were the first decade of true freedom and expression in the art of wardrobe. I found it deeply raw and it spoke right to my soul in its beauty and honesty.
I enrolled in a Fashion Marketing program just outside of Calgary . In this program I found I was drawn to wardrobe consulting and the artistry of styling. After completion this led me to some jobs ranging from visual merchandiser, management, private shopping, and sales in various clothing retail stores in Saskatoon and Edmonton. I have never been "good" at working for corporations because I found it always stifled my artistry in dressing. Plus, I'm a bit of a spontaneous lady which can sometimes cause me to pack a bag and go on an unplanned adventure. This led me to eventually go out on my own. In 2011 I was approached to do a presentation for a ladies luncheon on How to Dress for Your Body Type.
This also included performing a makeover on an attendee's closet. An idea was sparked at the moment to create a business on educating women on dressing for their figure and building confidence in my clients through their wardrobes. I relocated just outside of Saskatoon in 2014 permanently which is when I really put my focus on this business idea. I have since worked with hundreds of women on their closets, finding their inner muse or style, and confidence in apparel.
HOW DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR FIELD?
I have an obsession with researching brands giving me an edge and a vast knowledge of clothing brands and what is coming next in the industry. I educate myself thoroughly on quality of the product and what age range the brand is appropriate for. Age appropriateness is not so much about what you should not wear over a certain age but more about if the brand the consumer is buying is made for their figure at the age they are. My personal style of dressing and my playful personality helps me stand out in my field as well. I see an outfit as not just a basic need but a piece of artwork. When I get dressed in the morning I find inspiration from something and decorate myself accordingly. Sometimes it's a simple piece of jewelry and sometimes it is a more in depth feeling like listening to a Fleetwood Mac song. I have a very eclectic and eccentric style that is ever changing through immersing myself in other cultures, travel, and educating myself on trends. I am on the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival board and also a fashion columnist for The Vintage Gypsy Magazine. Both of these add to my diversity and range in the local fashion industry.
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? WHY DO OTHERS CARE?
I have an empathetic nature and nothing makes me happier than helping women with their confidence. Life is too short to hide who you are and be scared to express yourself and what you stand for. Clothing is an amazing way to express yourself without words and that to me is so beautiful especially in a world where we are bombarded with words and opinions all day.
The first wardrobe consultation I worked on was with a young woman who had just had her first baby and she was hysterical in a change room trying to find an outfit for a wedding. She was struggling with the changes that had occurred to her body during her pregnancy. This woman was a stranger to me and all I could see was this beautiful young woman with several amazing attributes and lots to offer the world. I made it my mission that she would leave beaming and feeling excited for this event and her outfit. This is the feeling I want for every client that works with me. I want to break all perceived status quo thoughts and rules on what a woman at particular life point or age should be wearing. Whether you are a new mom, a lawyer, a yoga instructor, a college student, or heading for retirement, none of it should matter. It is about how to show off your figure and your attributes in the best light while showcasing your personality and inner muse.
WHAT TYPE OF COLLABORATIONS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? ARE COLLABS OF INTEREST TO YOU?
I am looking for future wardrobe consulting clients who are yearning to learn how to dress for their best selves and showcase it in the world.
I am also a freelance style writer and would love to expand my style advice to other magazines and platforms.
Thirdly I am fashion stylist. I have worked with photographers, artists, and designers on fashion shoots and would love to continue expanding in that field as well. I love deep raw conversations that change the spark of your soul at the end of them and caffeine so even coffee dates are genuinely accepted.
WHAT IS YOUR NUMERO UNO WAY TO GET INSPIRED?
An article of clothing is a golden nugget for me. I usually have the full idea of what the outfit is going to look like based on examining the garment and looking at the details of it. The vision comes to me and then I go on a treasure hunt until I find the missing pieces to complete the look. Another way for me to get inspired is music. I have a deep love for music and dance. If I am feeling stuck I will put on my favourite band at the time or look up a new alternative playlist on Spotify and dance to my hearts content. Sometimes just a little strum on my guitar gets the creativity flowing.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOURSELF AT THE START OF YOUR CAREER TO HELP EASE YOUR TROUBLED MIND?
Anything is truly possible regardless of where you live and honor the process.
WHAT NEEDS REVAMPING IN YOUR LIFE OR CAREER RIGHT NOW?
I live outside of the city which is short term but for now takes up extra time traveling. Structure is not part of my personality but is a huge component to running a business so I am learning to lean into it and to incorporate this quality in my life with less resistance.
WHO INSPIRES YOU, OR MENTORS YOU?
Women and femininity in general inspire me. Freethinkers who do not always have to be voicing their opinions but carefully choose when it is time to listen and time to share inspire me. I have a lot of deep respect for freelance photographers and have had a few treasured ones become mentors to me and good friends. The way a picture stops time and freezes the moment resonates with me the same way an outfit does. It is another form of quiet expression. That speaks volumes to me. Any artisan really.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON AT THIS TIME?
I am working with a singer/songwriter at the moment on her stage wardrobe for an upcoming tour. This project gives me so much spark. It is a chance for me to create fashion artwork while placing it with the music style. Combining two of my deep loves and letting me truly create and be an artist myself.
