A holistic approach to your injury rehabilitation, healthcare, and wellness.

WHAT STEPS DID IT TAKE YOU TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

My professional practice follows a holistic or whole-being approach to health and wellness. My goal is to help people find the primary driver to their pain, reduced mobility, and reduced function. I strongly advocate that every person holds the power to be an active driver in their health and well-being. I strive to promote self-care with her clients and the community. I actively practice this in her personal life and works hard to have work-home-life balance.

My first education adventure was at the SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina, SK, where I completed a Certificate in Occupational Therapy Assistant/Physical Therapy Assistant in 2006.  I later completed a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with Great Distinction and majored in Adapted Physical Activity in 2011. I also completed a Certificate in Gerontology (Study of Aging) from Mount Royal University in 2011. Soon after I applied into the College of Medicine, School of Physical Therapy at the University of Saskatchewan where I completed a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy in 2013.

After graduation, I knew that she wanted to pursue continuing education in movement-based, alternative and integrative medicine. This is when I began the medical therapeutic yoga training at the Professional Yoga Therapy Institute in Emerald Isle, NC. I have continued in this path taking further training in yoga therapy specializing in pain care management, prenatal and postpartum therapeutic yoga, and pelvic floor and core re-training. I have also completed additional continuing education in Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy which provides me with specialized training and skills to assist patients with bladder and bowel concerns, pelvic pain, prenatal and postnatal rehabilitation, and pelvic organ prolapse. I have also received a certification in Biomedical Dry Needling and have now added this tool as an adjunct to my physiotherapy treatments with patients.

The biopsychosocial model (BPS) was the cornerstone of my yoga therapy training at The Professional Yoga Therapy Institute. I integrated the BPS model into my physiotherapy practice immediately and began looking beyond the physical injury. I developed Holistic Physiotherapy & Wellness (HPW) with a focus on utilizing the biopsychosocial model for assessments, treatments, and collaborations within the community by the entire integrative health practitioner team at HPW. We all value collaborative care. We all believe in listening to our patients’ stories and to develop a treatment plan that takes into account every aspect of their being. We are a team and we believe that we are a part of the paradigm shift in our healthcare system.

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

My mission is to encourage, empower, and support my patients and the community to be active participants in their health and well-being. I am passionate about collaborating with like-minded individuals whose mission and purpose in life is to encourage and empower people to live the best version of themselves through health and wellness. I believe that injury rehabilitation, healthcare and wellness is a holistic or ‘whole-person’ perspective. I also believe that it is imperative that we work as a community to make significant changes in our healthcare system.

WHY DO OTHERS CARE?

I believe that people want the opportunity to have someone listen to their story. I mean really listen. It is an honour to be chosen by a patient who feels safe and comfortable enough to share their story with me. To make significant changes in our healthcare system I believe that it begins with listening to the story. It is important to avoid narrowing our focus in on the individual parts, but to look broader and to treat the whole person.

HOW DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR FIELD?

The biopsychosocial model (BPS) was the cornerstone of my yoga therapy training at The Professional Yoga Therapy Institute. I integrated the BPS model into my physiotherapy practice immediately and began looking beyond the physical injury. I developed Holistic Physiotherapy & Wellness (HPW) with a focus on utilizing the biopsychosocial model for assessments, treatments, and collaborations within the community by the entire integrative health practitioner team at HPW. We are a team and we believe that we are a part of the paradigm shift in our healthcare system.

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE WAY TO GET INSPIRED?

Of course, I have to say my family. I am on this journey because I want my children to live in a world that values health and wellness to prevent disease, injury and disability. I want my children to value and practice kindness, gratitude, and collaboration. I want my children to follow their passions and to stand up for what they believe in no matter how challenging it is. When you have passion, anything is possible.

WHAT NEEDS REVAMPING IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW?

Hmmm, you know as a business owner it is challenging to be stellar in all aspects of life. The pressure to be a good business woman, a good practitioner, a good mom, a good wife… and somehow be a good ‘Kim’ is super difficult. To find time for myself is definitely the most challenging thing right now in my life. I actively work on home-work-self- balance and I believe that I will always have to work on this. It truly is hard to fill your cup up first before serving others.

WHO INSPIRES/MENTORS YOU?

My mentors in my professional world are Ginger Garner, Shelly Prosko, and Neil Pearson. They are outstanding physiotherapists and yoga therapists in North America. They continue to extend their passion, knowledge and energy towards integrating yoga into healthcare. I believe that I am on this journey because they inspired me, and I too want to be a part of integrating yoga into healthcare.

My husband inspires me to be exactly who I am and to not change one single thing about what makes me, Kim. When I am feeling defeated, uncomfortable, or anxious, he is the one that reminds me of my mission. He is my ‘person’. I admire his creative mind, his incredibly kind heart, his inquisitive nature, and his passion to live in the moment. He keeps me grounded and out of the clouds. I am the intuitive dreamer and he is the practical guide in our relationship. He inspires me to stay true to my vision and to never feel small.

WHEN AND WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO WORK BEST?

I like to be in a quiet space with soft jazz playing in the back ground. I like to be warm and therefore I am usually snuggled up with a blanket when I am doing the ‘business’ side of things for work. I have made my treatment room at the clinic cozy and inviting. I have placed items in the space that brings me a sense of comfort and peace.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOURSELF AT THE START OF YOUR CAREER?

You’ve got this. Stay true to what you believe in. Stay focused and grounded. Listen to what your heart is telling you…it’s your passion guide and passion will lead you on a wonderful journey.

WHAT TYPE OF COLLABORATIONS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

I am looking to collaborate with women who are supporting women in their present and future journeys. I am looking to connect on a deeper level where I can be vulnerable and talk about how hard it is to be a business woman and a good mom. I want to collaborate with women who are passionate about supporting women during the beautiful journey of motherhood. I am also looking to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share the same vision of being a part of the paradigm shift of our health care system by focusing on proactive health and wellness.

HOW CAN THE WELL HELP YOU?

I adore your why: we gather . we support . we rise. Women supporting women, I love it!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT YOU ARE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

Breath, Pelvic Floor, and Core Sensory Awareness and Coordination during pregnancy in preparation for labour and delivery. With heightened awareness, knowledge and empowerment women have greater success in their post-partum recovery to get back to doing the things they love to do and more!
